In my study, I research the relationship between quality of care in a hospital and its profitability, measured through the net operating profit margin. I hypothesize that hospitals with higher quality of care will exhibit higher net operating profit margins. My sample includes 1,252 short-term acute care hospitals and I will proxy quality of care using the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Summary Star Rating, serious complication rate, and readmission rate. The HCAHPS Summary star rating as well as six clinical care variables are significant in the study and while the other two variables of interest are not significant, my hypothesis can be supported by the previously mentioned variables.
