This study investigates pay and performance among Major League Baseball free agent batters, aiming to determine what factors of production drive free agent pay the most. Specifically modeling after the Moneyball hypothesis, and focusing on on base percentage, as well as wins above replacement (Lewis, 2003). Free agent contract data and the coinciding contract year statistics were used for each free agent who signed a contract in the MLB from 2016 to 2020. Three standard Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions were run, and the beta coefficients were calculated to rank and compare the ability of each metric to drive player value. The results show that wins above replacement was the most powerful statistic in impacting free agent contract value, with weighted runs created close behind. On base percentage was found to be less influential on free agent contract values than expected.
