Undertaking better laboratory practices in chemistry is very important for the advancement of more environmentally responsible approaches in the field. Mechanochemistry has grown in popularity within recent decades to address this exact concern. In general, mechanochemistry is a synthesis technique in which chemical compounds are produced by grinding reactants together, either by hand or in a powered ball mill. Traditional wet chemistry is solvent heavy, specifically in the synthesis and purification of coordination compounds, which are the desired products of this research. Solvents are often expensive and environmentally harmful or even toxic. Mechanochemical synthesis allows for a solvent-free (or highly reduced amount of solvent) approach, thus product formation is green, and potentially much less expensive. The solid powder metal-porphyrin products obtained herein through mechanochemical synthesis attempts were characterized via x-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR).
