This paper investigates the way that teams value a free agent pitcher that has received Tommy John surgery, using annual average contract value and contract length. The paper also examines if years removed from Tommy John surgery affects the way teams value a free agent pitcher. In this study I investigate free agent pitching contracts and the free agent’s stats from the previous year. This sample is comprised of free agent pitchers that have signed a new contract from 2015 through 2019. The results showed a decrease in annual average contract value for starters. All other results show that Tommy John surgery and years removed from Tommy John surgery have no significant effect on annual average value or contract length.
